Trying to keep our hair looking its best this season can be challenge, but for us fine-haired girls, it can be even trickier. That’s why we turned to celebrity hairstylist and founder of Hair Room Service, Michael Dueñas, to get his tips and tricks for styling our fine strands during the summer.
Go For Heatless Styles
You can put away the blow-dryer and curling iron and opt for heatless styles instead. The trick to getting the perfect ‘do is to plan it the night before. “Create large braids with messy sections before you sleep,” Dueñas says. “Keep them loose with the braid not starting until after the round of the top of your head. When you wake, take out your braids and comb out. You will have a great beach texture without using any heat or damaging your hair.”

Foam rollers are another option for overnight styling. You can create waves, curls and even straight hair with these tools. The key to using them is to set your hair when it’s damp at night and then brush it out in the a.m. for a style that lasts all day.
Use a Lightweight Conditioning Treatment
Strengthen strands without weighing them down by using a lightweight conditioning treatment once a week. “Leave it in for at least 30 minutes and then rinse it out completely,” Dueñas suggests. “If you feel it weighs your hair down, lightly shampoo out the conditioner and finish with a leave-in conditioner.” We like Philip B Light-Weight Deep Conditioning Creme ($28), a weekly treatment that adds shine, tames frizz and locks in moisture.
Protect Hair From the Sun
Just like your skin needs protection from the sun’s harmful rays, so does your hair. “A light misting of spray-on sunscreen can do wonders!” Dueñas says. Reach for one like Aveda Sun Care Protective Veil ($28), which has a lightweight mist that delivers up to 16 hours of sun protection to minimize dryness and fight free-radical damage.
