A matte lip can be a sexy and beautiful look, but the key to pulling off this trend is knowing how to get it just right. We turned to makeup artist and founder of Elcie Cosmetics, Lilit Caradanian, to find out how to get the perfect, dramatic pout.
Exfoliate First
Start by creating a smooth, even-textured canvas. Caradanian says, “Lip exfoliators are great to use before applying a matte lip. Try using an exfoliator at night and top it off with a soothing lip balm, as matte lips can also mean dry lips.”

Use Liner
A great end result always starts from a great beginning. “Use lip liner in the same color of the lipstick or lip stain you are using to help create a more defined lip and avoid a messy job—matte colors are pretty tough to clean up. Some lip stains already come with a convenient lip brush, which you can use as your liner,” says Caradanian.
Layer vs. Layers
Sometimes less is more. Caradanian suggests only putting on one or two layers. “The more you layer on, the dryer your lips will look and feel, and they can even start flaking off. Thin layers will give you a longer-lasting, more natural effect.”
Make The Look Last
A good tip in making your color last is to, “Keep your lips away from grease and alcohol, which are two things that will break down the product. Try using a fork for greasy foods and a straw in your cocktails,” Caradanian suggests.
Time For A Touch-Up
Instead of swiping on a new layer to freshen up your lips, Caradanian says, “If you ever need to retouch, I suggest removing the entire thing and reapplying it in order to avoid any cakiness.”
In a Pinch
Want to try the matte look, but don’t have a matte lipstick? “You can mattify your regular shade by using tissue paper or patting some powder on top of the paper and blotting it against your lips for long-lasting matte coverage,” Caradanian says.
