Everyone loses hair; it’s actually normal to lose between 50-100 hairs each day. Hair loss, on the other hand, shows itself with bald patches or lots of thinning. It’s often times hereditary or caused by things like pregnancy, stress and illness and can sometimes be addressed with hair-loss treatments. While not all hair loss can be prevented, there are some ways you can help prevent it and keep your strands as healthy as possible. Celebrity hair stylist, Josue Perez shared with us his best preventative tips:
Protect your hair. Always use a leave-in conditioner or styling serum to coat the hair prior to blow-drying, straightening or curling. This will create a protective layer between the heat and the hair and prevent damage or overheating. Also, don’t wear your ponytails too tight—it can cause breakage when you pull it out at the end of the day.
Don’t overheat your hair. Keep your blow dryer on a cool or low heat and use a straightener designed to protect against damaging. I recommend the Rowenta Straight Express Iron, which straightens even the coarsest hair in just one pass—eliminating the need to go over the hair multiple times. The built-in ionic generator emits pure negative ions to keep hair healthy and the hard-anodized nano-titanium and tourmaline-boosted ceramic plates deliver even heat distribution and non-damaging infrared ionic heat.
Don’t dye your hair more than one to two shades its normal color. The more severe color change, the more chemicals required, which can make hair break.
Pay attention to your diet. Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids (i.e. salmon) to improve hair health and strength.
