4 Easy Ways to Keep Your Color Looking Perfect This Fall

By ·

Once the weather starts to get a tad bit cooler, the leaves start to change and you trade your flip flops for booties, most of us tend to go a little darker with our hair color. “During the summer, we see bright beachy blonds that look great next to tawny skin. Unfortunately, during the cooler months, our skin becomes pale and more ashy and those bright colors don’t work as well,” says expert colorist Giselle at Pierre Michel Salon. But, regardless of whether or not you tweak your color come fall, it’s pretty common for hair to start to feel dry and dull this time of year, but these four tricks will leave your hair looking and feeling its absolute best.

Use Lots Of Conditioner

As Giselle explains, deep conditioners used regularly are imperative for keeping your color looking good once the temperatures start to drop. “They help keep moisture in the hair that is often lost due to the drier weather.” She also says to shampoo (always with sulfate-free products) less than normal because they can strip color from hair. “On the days you don’t shampoo, just rinse and condition your hair.”

Get a Gloss

One of the easiest and most low-maintenance ways to give your hair some life is with a gloss. “They are an easy way to transition your hair color and deepen blond shades to give a more subtle tone,” says Giselle. They come in a variety of shades, too, so you can get the exact hue that you want.

Add in Lowlights

“Ask your colorist to incorporate more lowlights into your hair the next time you get your highlights done,” says Giselle. “Lowlights can be done in a darker shade of blond to give more contrast and depth to the hair.” She adds that going a little deeper and warmer with your color—you can still stay blond—will give the illusion of healthier hair.

When You Shampoo, Use One That’s Tinted

AJ Lordet, senior color expert at Pierre Michel Salon, recommends color-treated clients wash their hair with a shampoo that has some tint to it. “These products are designed to diminish unwanted tones in the hair, like brass, or enhance tones, like golds and reds. I like Tinted Love from eSalon ($15).”
