We all have those days when we just don’t want to put any makeup on, but know that it’s a must. Rather than having to resort to donning a full face, made-up eyes and cheeks day in and day out, take cues from these expert tips when you want to take it down a notch.
Go With a Neutral Lip
Celebrity makeup artist Kindra Mann says a neutral-colored lip is important in achieving a natural look with makeup because it sets the tone. “A bold color would draw attention to the fact that you’re wearing makeup,” she says. “Subtle and muted tones are best. Stick to shades that mimic the natural color of your lips or those that correspond with your skin’s undertones.” And, opt for something creamy, as opposed to matte, like Hourglass Femme Nude Lipstick #3. $30, sephora.com

Add a Bit of Shine to Your Lips
You can add a little shine to your lips without having to go with gloss. “You want a formula that’s on the creamier side so your lips look hydrated and not dry,” says Mann. Reach for something like C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve, a rose-based healing salve that leaves lips healthy and shiny. $5.50, bigelowchemists.com

Pick a Natural Color For Your Lids
Nothing gives a more natural look to the eyes than neutral-toned shadows that complement your skin. “Light golds and browns tend to look best on everyone. They are foolproof shades that anyone can use,” says Mann. “But, don’t apply too much shadow. Use a fluffy blending brush to lightly wash the color all over the lid. The key is just to hint at the color and keep the application light.” Each of the 12 clay-based matte shadows in Tarte’s Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Palette features neutral tones that look pretty on the eyes while still retaining a natural look. $44, tarte.com

Keep Skin Fresh
BB creams, as well as tinted moisturizers or superlight foundations, are great because they give coverage without making skin look heavy or made up. “You can also apply concealer just where you need a little extra coverage. This keeps skin looking fresh and not overly done up,” says Mann. One to try: Rimmel London BB Cream Matte, which makes pores look smaller and skin look better and even helps to heal breakouts. $7, us.rimmellondon.com

Go Light On Your Lashes
Totally bare lashes can sometimes look, well, strange—especially if you’re used to wearing mascara regularly. Apply a tint, like Estée Lauder Little Black Primer, which not only preps the lashes should you choose to wear mascara, but also gives just a bit of color to the lashes that’s silky and soft looking. “Just a little mascara is great. Don’t load up on it,” says Mann. $24, esteelauder.com

Just a Flush On Your Cheeks
Just a flush of color on your cheeks is all you need. Mann says cream blush gives a fresh, natural glow. “Light pinks and rosy and light peach tones look great on almost every skin tone. Apply them with your fingers or a soft brush.” Convertible Color from Stila, gives that “glow-from-within” look. $25, stilacosmetics.com
