It’s true that concerns like discoloration and worn teeth can make you look older, but there are ways to reverse those effects. According to
Irwin Smigel, DDS, “Aesthetic dentists have the ability to create more defined cheekbones, fuller lips and smaller smile lines all by adjusting your smile.”

You can find plenty of tips and advice online for aging concerns pertaining to skin and hair, but teeth are often overlooked by most beauty sites. We know that a perfect smile is as important as getting rid of lines and wrinkles when it comes to maintaining a youthful appearance.

Regardless of how much effort you put into making sure your hair is flawless and complexion is perfect, discolored teeth can make you look older than you are. “Whiter teeth can make everyone look healthier, younger and more vibrant. You look better, feel better and you’ll make a stronger impression on others,” says Dr. Smigel.

WHY IT’S HAPPENING:
“The enamel is whiter when we are younger and the dentin is always darker and can appear as yellow or brown. When the enamel wears, the yellow or brown begins to influence the shade of the teeth,” explains Ronald E. Goldstein, DD.

HOW TO FIX IT:
In-office light- or laser- based bleaching is best for discoloration. Another option is an at-home bleaching tray available through your dentist.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
Despite staining culprits, teeth will still become discolored with age. The longer you wait to correct the problem, the more discoloration will ensue and the harder it will be to get back to your baseline shade of white.

WHAT THE THE EXPERTS ARE SAYING:
3 Anti-Aging Smile-Care Tips

“Avoid bad habits that can age your smile, such as jamming toothpicks between your teeth, chewing ice or smoking,” says Dr. Goldstein.

“Wear an occlusal nightguard when sleeping to protect the main edges on the teeth, which are an integral part of your smile,” says Wilmette, IL, cosmetic dentist Craig S. Kohler, DDS.

“Replace any missing teeth and restore a collapsed bite as soon as possible,” adds Fort Washington, PA, cosmetic dentist Thomas J. Balshi, DDS.
