FACT: A breast lift lasts 15 to 20 years!
When an implant is placed into the breast cavity there is potential (it doesn’t always happen) for the breast tissue to change around the implant and have a positive effect. “This tends to happen more with women who go with a bigger sized implant that fits their body and the breast pocket pretty well. As they age and the breast tissue and implant start to fall, the breast changes look more natural and you may not even be able to tell that the patient had an augmentation,” says Nana Mizuguchi, MD. “On the flip side, if the weight of the implant is too heavy for the body it can cause the breasts to sag, sometimes earlier than normal.
The only way to fully and permanently correct sagging breasts, be it from weight loss, aging, genetics or the effects of pregnancy, is with a breast lift in which the tissue is surgically repositioned to a higher position. If you correct sagging in your breasts they will still continue to age—you just will not experience the same degree of sagging in the future.
“Make sure you are close to your ideal weight before committing to this type of surgery because additional weight loss can have an effect on how the breasts will look later,” adds San Antonio plastic surgeon Mark W. Greene, MD.
