According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Botox is the number one cosmetic treatment in the country. With a whopping 5.7 million procedures performed last year, it’s up 621 percent from the year 2000. That’s one billion dollars worth of wrinkles—totally relaxed.
Not only is it one of the most affordable cosmetic procedures you can have, it also happens to be the “go-to” neurotoxin for many dermatologists and plastic surgeons due to its ability to provide long-term wrinkle reduction and even more importantly, prevention of future wrinkles. However, despite the fact that Botox is extremely pervasive these days, most women don’t actually know much about it.
For instance, how it actually works. But don’t worry, Chestnut Hill, MA, facial plastic surgeon Jeffrey Spiegel, MD, offers a great explanation in layman terms: “Botox works by blocking the way the nerve stimulates muscles in the face,” he says. And by blocking the receptor that signals the muscle to retract, the muscle doesn’t move and therefore relaxes and relieves wrinkles.
Another common fact about Botox that women don’t know is how long it takes to see the effects of it. When we asked our NewBeauty Facebook fans how long they think it takes, we heard answers in the range of 24 hours to five weeks!
Again, Dr. Spiegel clears it up: “Everyone is different. It would be unusual to see much difference before two days and most people see it working really well in about five days.”
If you are looking for a quicker result, some competitors like Dysport take effect sooner, says New York dermatologist Gervaise Gerstner, MD, but “the results are not as good for many patients,” he says. “Botox is the only neurotoxin I use.”
