Sure, you recycle soda cans and water bottles, but does your commitment to reducing your carbon footprint extend beyond your kitchen? According to a recent telephone survey conducted by L’Oréal and ORC International, the answer for many households is no-or at least not yet. According to the survey, not everyone is completely in tune with the green movement, especially when it comes to cosmetics.
Here are a few statistics from the survey:
• Less than 1 in 4 respondents buy eco-friendly products validated by third-party labels and certifications
• 43 percent said they would only purchase eco-friendly products if they were offered at the same price as their usual brands
• 38 percent would choose the more eco-friendly option between products that perform equally
• 39 percent do not believe climate change is occurring (this figure increases to 45 percent in the 55+ age demographic)
• 1 out of 4 respondents, age 65 and over, said they don’t care about climate change because they don’t perceive it as affecting their lives
• 79 percent of respondents age 18 to 34 believe new technologies and alternative energy sources are necessary to reduce global warming
• 46 percent of respondents indicated they are avid recyclers, although 24 percent only recycle items in their kitchen
L’Oréal recently announced a partnership between its Garnier brand and TerraCycle to provide consumers with an alternative for recycling product packaging. TerraCycle collects product waste through mail-in programs to recycle and upcycle waste into new product packaging materials. We know other companies offer similar recycling programs including MAC’s “Back to MAC” program, which offers consumers a free lipstick for every six primary packaging containers returned to the company, and Origins’ “Return to Origins” program, which allows customers to return packaging to stores or by mail to be recycled.
