With her due date right around the corner, there’s no doubt that Jessica Simpson is looking forward to recapturing her pre-baby body. Many of us can relate to those first months of struggling to whittle down our middles to their previous shape, but the truth is, it can’t be rushed. We asked San Francisco, plastic surgeon Edward P. Miranda, MD, about the best way to plan a mommy makeover, which typically consists of a tummy tuck, breast lift or augmentation, liposuction and/or other body-enhancing treatments.

“The timing of mommy makeovers is important,” he says. “The critical issues are that you should not plan on additional pregnancies in the short term (during next few years), you should be done breastfeeding and ideally have stabilized your weight. Women can still have additional children after surgery, however it may adversely alter their appearance again.”

Typically, he says, mommy makeovers can be planned about six months after delivery if the patient has met the criteria he mentioned. And many of the procedures can be done simultaneously if the patient is in good health and has discontinued breastfeeding, he explains. A procedure like a lower-body lift, during which excess skin is surgically removed, may be done at a different time than the typical mommy makeover treatments.

One of the advantages to combining procedures is that you’re also combining recovery times. Typically, patients are looking at about two weeks downtime.
