It’s happened to the best of us. We have a huge occasion over the weekend that we need to look our best for and the (seemingly) unthinkable happens: A cystic acne breakout.
Believe it or not, this happens to celebrities a lot. They really are just like us and struggle with adult acne breakouts. Wink, nudge. And when this happens, supermodels and actresses head to their dermatologists office for a steroid shot. New York dermatologist Eric Schweiger, MD, says that stars have a trusted dermatologist on call who they can visit on the day of the red carpet, in order to have a cortisone injection—an acne treatment that can work wonders to clear up a problem area.
So what exactly happens during this quick-fix procedure? New York dermatologist Rebecca Baxt, MD says that a doctor can gently place a very diluted quantity of a “glucocorticoid” steroid into the cyst to ease pain and reduce inflammation. “Glucocorticoids are a class of steroid molecules that are naturally produced by our bodies and have numerous functions including the regulation of human metabolism, immunity, and inflammation. They have very potent anti-inflammatory effects so they are often used to treat inflammatory diseases in medicine,” she says. “They can be formulated as creams to treat skin rashes or as pills to treat systemic disease. They can also be injected directly into local areas of inflammation such as in arthritic joints and inflamed acne cysts.”
After just one or two days after the injection, the steroid will shrink the inflammation of the acne and will ease any pain from the pimple as well as provide almost immediate improvement in the look of the area. A dot of concealer later and you will never know the whole mess even happened.
