This New Toothpaste Ingredient Promises to Harden Teeth While You Sleep

Tooth decay and tooth sensitivity affect a lot of people—and their smiles. And now, according to the Queen Mary University of London, it might be something a new toothpaste ingredient can fix as you drift off into dreamland.

The ingredient, BioMInF, claims to release lost minerals, including the two key ones of calcium and phosphate. Together, the duo combines to form new tooth mineral, in turn, rebuilding, strengthening and protecting the tooth’s structure.

"Using remineralizing toothpaste makes teeth far more resistant to attack from acidic soft drinks like fruit juices and sodas. It is also much more effective than conventional toothpastes where the active ingredients, such as soluble fluoride, are washed away and become ineffective less than two hours after brushing," said professor Robert Hill, chair of Dental Physical Sciences at Queen Mary University of London, who led the team which developed BioMin.

Right now, the toothpaste is available in the UK via dental offices with a bigger rollout expected by year’s end.

Absolutely, Dr. Grafman! I have been using MI Paste in addition to whitening trays to help patients with weak enamel for years! This new tooth paste may have other ingredients that are beneficial. But for now you have options. Weak enamel and demineralized teeth can make teeth look grey, as well as, be sensitive to hot and cold foods. In my practice a regimen using custom trays, MI Paste and Carifree has helped my patients get stronger healthier teeth and minimize sensitivity. Patients have been showing excellent results.

Fortunately the U.S. already has similar products that our office has been using for years as part of our prevention program. Calcium, phosphate and fluoride remineralize the tooth under the right conditions. It's important to remove plaque and calculus to allow the product to reach your tooth. Also these products are more efficient in the right pH. Once we can establish a healthy environment in your mouth products such as MI Paste, Remin Pro and Carifree can help remineraluze your enamel. This new product may offer something more but until it gets here we have great options that work well.
