Greasy, oily, slick. Call it what you will. Bottom line, no one wants an oily scalp. But, the way you go about treating it makes all the difference in getting rid of the problem once and for all.
First things first, switch up your shampoo and try a medicated one. “Look for one that’s formulated specifically for an oily scalp or dandruff,” says Smithtown, NY, dermatologist Marina Peredo, MD. “Avoid heavy conditioners and oily products like pomades and oils.” Make sure you’re looking for one that has ingredients like ketoconazole, salicylic acid, tar or selenium in it, which will help fight excessive oil production. And, try not to skip too many days between shampooing—one, maybe two, is really the most you should stretch it to.

If washing doesn’t help, you may have to take your efforts to the next level with a trip to your dermatologist. “There are medications, either topical or oral, that can be prescribed to help manage the problem,” says Dr. Peredo. Those can be coupled with prescription-strength products, which together should be able to help get the issue under control.
