Ask an Expert: How Can I Keep My Lips Plump?
You don’t have to be naturally blessed like Angelina Jolie or Kerry Washington to get the full, plump lips of your dreams. The cosmetic industry and major beauty brands have taken notice of the increasing interest in plump lips from women of all ages.
“The easiest way to plump lips is to apply an over-the-counter lip plumper,” says Washington, D.C., dermatologist Tina S. Alster, MD. If this sounds like the perfect solution for you, you’re in luck. Many beauty brands offer clear and tinted lip glosses that have ingredients in them that work to plump lips. According to Dr. Alster, these products work because their ingredients increase blood flow to the lips, causing them to temporarily swell.

If you’re looking for an option that lasts more than one night, Dr. Alster recommends an injection of a hyaluronic acid filler, such as Juvéderm, Restylane or Belotero. However, she cautions patients not to go overboard with injections. “Overdone (or over-plumped) lips look fake. The trick to achieving a natural look is to be conservative with how much filler is injected. Small amounts are best because if lips are overfilled, they can appear waxy and stiff-looking.”
