Should You Use a Powder Cleanser?

The world of facial cleansers is already a bit overwhelming to say the least—you've got everything from milks and foams to creams and oils (and that’s not all!). Now, there are also powders (most of them feel like actual baby powder) that become chalky and liquidy when you mix them with water and then apply them to your skin. So why should you use one?

According to New York aesthetician Mandy Epley, “these new-school cleansers” are all the rage right now because they do not have the preservatives, alcohols and/or detergents that many gel and cream cleansers do. “Pulverized powder formulations are usually more natural and can be gentle enough for all skin types, even acne-prone and those with rosacea,” she explains. “They will soften and smooth your face by adding lost moisture immediately back into your skin with the oils and conditioners that are in the formulas. Your skin will show remarkable improvements within a few days of using these synthetic-free cleansers—it will look refined and toned and feel purified." Epley adds that all you need to do is mix it with as much or as little water as you like before washing your face. "With one drop of water, the powder will go on like a scrub. Apply 10 or more drops of water, and it will work more like a gentle liquid cleanser.”
