The Secret to Younger-Looking Eyes

Despite your best effort to cover up and camouflage droopy, saggy and hooded lids, there’s only so much that can be done to make them look less noticeable. Part of the reason why the upper lids are tough to disguise is because of the laxness of skin, which really can only be corrected with surgical intervention.

Defining characteristics: Loose skin on the upper lid that’s often crepey and covered with lines; a poorly defined crease in the upper lid; brows that sit low; a crowding of the area between the brows and upper eyelashes; some fat bulging

Why it’s happening: Boca Raton, FL, oculoplastic surgeon Steven Fagien, MD, says that many patients usually want surgery on the upper lids due to skin that hangs down, reducing the area where they once may have had more room to easily apply cosmetics. This may partially be due to the loss of firmness in this region along with a combination of factors. Hooded upper lids often equate to a disposition perceived as being sad or angry. Madison, WI, facial plastic surgeon Richard Parfitt, MD, adds, “Plus, the eyebrow sits lower, which can make an individual come across as angry or sad. The lower brow position crowds the upper eyelid, creating more laxity and hooding.”

How to fix it: There are ways that your plastic surgeon can correct the upper eyelids, depending on what’s causing them to look heavy. Excess skin can be removed to correct hooding, but getting rid of too much can hollow out the eye. “This is where finesse in technique comes into play,” says New York facial plastic surgeon Dilip D. Madnani, MD. Volume can also be used to rejuvenate the lids. While some doctors inject hyaluronic acid fillers into the area or transfer fat to eliminate the look of any hollowing (it needs to be done precisely and accurately), others revolumize simply by preserving as much of the tissue as possible. “Using existing soft tissue and not just eliminating it by surgery doesn’t leave the eyes hollowed out but rather refreshed and full of volume, oftentimes in a way better than fillers,” says Dr. Fagien. If you’re told that you look angry and your upper eyelids are not displaying signs of hooding, talk to your doctor about neurotoxins to diminish low-lying brows.
