Mri Screening For Silicone Breast Implants
By NewBeauty Staff |
With the FDA approval of silicone breast implants for breast enhancement in women over age 22 came the recommendation that 3 years of insertion, and every two years thereafter a woman have the implants screened by MRI to asses the condition of the implant shell (called a lumen). Even if your implants seem to be looking and functioning perfectly, this is a guideline that implant manufacturers and plastic surgeons are required to communicate to you.
Insurance will not pay for this screening, and it is not a substitute for a mammogram or ultrasound to assess breast health and screen for potential breast cancer. And although recommended by the FDA, it is your choice to undergo the MRI just as it is your choice to have the implants in the first place. The cost for an MRI implant screening varies, but expect to pay $600 to $1,000 or more.
