When Plastic Surgery Is More Than Cosmetic
By NewBeauty Editors |
In many cases, plastic surgery procedures are purely cosmetic, addressing features that one would simply like to change. Other cases go far beyond aesthetic issues. According to the board-certified plastic surgeons of La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre, certain cosmetic procedures can not only eliminate painful or bothersome physical problems, but they can also alleviate associated emotional anguish. These are three of the most popular surgeries known to fix more than just what’s wrong on the outside.
Excessively large female breasts can cause a variety of physical problems including chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain; impaired breathing; poor posture; skin chafing or irritation and skin indentations from bra straps. In addition to physical pain, many women also develop emotional discomfort and self-esteem issues from having excessively large breasts.
Sagging skin in the upper eyelid is called dermatochalasis. For some patients it is a cosmetic concern, but functional dermatochalasis also affects the visual field, interfering with normal vision. Blepharoplasty, or an eyelid lift, helps patients when their vision has been impacted by extra skin that adds weight and causes the eyelids to droop.
While rhinoplasty (a nose job) is often a cosmetic procedure, it is also commonly used to correct defects or repair injuries to the nose. Septoplasty is a different procedure that addresses issues with obstruction of the nasal passages; often rhinoplasty and septoplasty are performed in combination.
If you are unhappy with any of your features and feel surgery could alleviate any physical or emotional pain, plastic surgery might be a valid option. We recomend always electing surgical procedures for the right reasons and disucssing all of your concerns with a board-certified plastic surgeon, facial plastic surgeon or dermatologist.
