Lose Mouth Lines and Wrinkles Without a Facelift

Deeply etched lines surrounding the mouth can be a dead giveaway to your real age, but when the outer corners of the mouth start to turn downward, the look is an instantly aged one.
Hyaluronic acid fillers do the best job at lifting a downturned smile. “Fillers are used to resupport the loss of volume in the chin and lift it up, which in turn causes the corners of the mouth to be lifted as well,” says New York and Miami dermatologist Fredric Brandt, MD. Often used with Botox, Dysport or Xeomin, synthetic fillers literally push saggy skin up and out to create a more defined lip and smile. “Using fillers in the corner of the mouth works because lost volume is replaced and support is restored. It just ‘appears’ to lift the corners,” says Las Vegas plastic surgeon Goesel Anson, MD. The area around the mouth should retain movement, which is why something, like Radiesse, should not be used as it can cause lumpiness, excessive swelling and irreversible results, unlike hyaluronic acid fillers.
Results should last from three to four months for neurotoxins, six months to a year or more when fillers are used. If you opt for a facelift, the results will be more dramatic and permanent but there is greater downtime. Botox, Dysport or Xeomin may still be needed.
