Rejuvenate Your Aging Smile

“No matter how well-groomed you are, if your smile is stained, or you have chipped teeth or puffy gums, it will ruin the youthful, healthy image you want to convey,” says New York cosmetic dentist Irwin Smigel, DDS.
The effects of an aging smile can compromise facial support, which can cause the face to appear disproportionate, lending to a gaunt appearance that makes one look older. Dr. Smigel says, “Aesthetic dentistry is a practical way to create illusions to improve your appearance and to enhance a person’s smile and facial characteristics.”
To restore a youthful smile, a full smile makeover may be necessary. “Modern dentistry is like a nonsurgical facelift, which can reshape and take years off the face, simply by adjusting teeth,” says Dr. Smigel. “By taking the entire face into consideration and shaping each individual tooth, either with bonding or applying veneers or crowns, aesthetic dentists are able to build out the teeth to restore your face to its ideal proportions.”
A gummy smile can make someone look like they have shorter teeth, which can also make them appear older than they are or give away your age. A gum lift may be necessary to transform a gummy smile. “A gum lift can be performed by removing gum tissue with a laser or by periodontal surgery. Then, depending on the actual length of the teeth involved, restoring those teeth with either veneers or crowns,” says Redondo Beach, CA, cosmetic dentist Michael Fulbright, DDS. “Oftentimes, the gum lift is needed without a restoration. Another option is to surgically reposition the upper lip.”
