The Pros and Cons of a Nose Job

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, can offer substantially dramatic results on your overall look. But it’s important to understand what the surgery can and cannot provide in terms of results. If your expectations are unrealistic or you are not a good candidate for the procedure, you may not be happy with the outcome and the benefit may not necessarily outweigh the risks. We broke down the pros and cons.

The Pros:

1. Can bring balance and harmony
Chevy Chase, MD, facial plastic surgeon Shervin Naderi, MD, says rhinoplasty can take away any distractions caused by a disproportionate nose and bring balance and harmony to the face.

2. Helps alleviate breathing problems
When the nose is deviated, collapsed or turbinated, breathing can be difficult. Straightening out the nose makes it easier to breathe.

3. Positively impacts self-image and self-confidence
“Small changes to the nose can make a big impact and boost self confidence,” says Richmond, VA, facial plastic surgeon Michael Godin, MD.

The Cons:

1. Thicker skin can hide nasal flaws
The thicker and more sebaceous the skin is, the more difficult it can be to achieve the desired results.

2. A single surgery can only provide so much improvement
According to San Francisco facial plastic surgeon David W. Kim, MD, rhinoplasty only permits a certain degree of change to be made.

3. Too much can’t be changed at once
If the bone or cartilage is manipulated to a certain point it may try to return to its inherent positioning. This is why secondary surgeries may be needed.

I believe subtle refinement is the hallmark of good rhinoplasty. My goal is to balance a patient’s face while maintaining the essence of his/her natural beauty and character. A patient should never appear distorted nor dramatically changed following nose surgery. Furthermore, I think an important “pro” that was not mentioned is how rhinoplasty can positively enhance the perception of a patient’s personality and demeanor. My rhinoplasty patients, particularly women for whom I corrected high nasal bridges, tell me that prior to surgery they were often misjudged as harsh or inapproachable. In its best form, facial plastic surgery can be a powerful tool to achieve harmony between how patients see themselves and how they are seen by others.

There are MANY more cons than those listed! Daniel Rousso took out almost all of my cartilage, during a simple procedure. My nose now is retraced on one side, the lack of symmetry is embarrassing, the bridge has fallen in, smiling makes my face looks distorted, and breathing is difficult.
