How To Care For Your Invisalign Braces

After years of dealing with slightly crooked teeth, you finally decided to get Invisalign or another brand of clear, removable braces. It's a good choice, after all, they can discreetly straighten your teeth and as Atlanta cosmetic dentist, Ronald E. Goldsten, DDS, says "you can bleach your teeth at the same time" to get a whiter, better-looking smile.

But once you have the aligners, they do need some care and cleaning. After all, you're constantly putting them in and taking them out of your mouth, and you sleep with them in overnight.

That's why Redondo Beach, CA, cosmetic dentist, Michael Fulbright, DDS, suggests rinsing and brushing your aligners with cold water two to three times a day. But adds that you should avoid using toothpaste. "Toothpastes are abrasive and will make the aligners more cloudy and take away the effect of the clear aspect of why you did it in the first place," he says. Also, don't forget to brush and floss your teeth before you put them back in.

If you find that the aligners need deep cleaning, you can purchase the Invisalign Cleaning System ($75), but Dr. Fulbright says your best option is to simply soak them in a 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water for about 10 to 20 minutes before brushing them. Just never "soak your aligners for long periods of time or use hot water as this will cause distortion in them and then they won't fit," he adds.

Follow these tips and your aligners should be clear and bright in no time!
