Cosmetic Surgery Techniques In An Unexpected Place
By Marci Robin |
Thyroid surgery isn't typically considered a cosmetic procedure, but more and more surgeons are going about it that way.
A Medical College of Georgia study shows that, when thyroid diseases lead to the need for surgery, patients are concerned about much more than just their medical condition. Many are worried about the post-op appearance of their neck. As a result, surgeons are approaching thyroid surgery with this concern in mind.
"While keeping the management of the underlying thyroid problems as the first priority, we can still achieve a maximal cosmetic result," department chair Dr. David Terris reported.
Amongst the cosmetic surgery techniques otolaryngologists are using: marking incision sites while the patient is standing, minimizing trauma to surrounding skin or trimming traumatized edges, and using surgical glue instead of sutures.
However, most otalaryngologists are not specifically trained in facial plastic surgery, so if you require thyroid surgery, do not expect the doctor to be able to entertain a request for a necklift or facelift.
