Too Much Filler? Here's How To Tell
By Shellie Terry Benson |
Fillers can help restore lost facial volume and smooth away lines, but how do you know if you've gone too far? We turned to Nashville, TN, dermatologist Michael H. Gold, MD, for some answers. He says, "We see an awful lot of people over-filled in the lips. Too much filler can lead to a look that is sometimes not balanced to the rest of the face."
Many of today's celebrities have been over-injected, Dr. Gold says. "It shows when they cannot move their mouths or do not look right." When asked for examples, he says, "Perhaps Priscilla Presley from a few years ago on Dancing With the Stars and even Joan Rivers. Both look over-corrected with fillers and perhaps neurotoxins."
While the cause of looking "over-filled" is too much filler being injected, Dr. Gold says the type of filler is also important. "Not all fillers are appropriate in every area," he explains. "You do not use Radiesse in the lips or any permanent filler as it is not correctable and can lead to lumps, bumps and other problems."
The key, Dr. Gold says, is choosing an injector who is experienced and familiar with all of the fillers available, especially when it comes to the permanent filler Artefill. "That point cannot be stressed enough: This needs to be injected by skilled injectors," he explains. "With that said, Artefill can be used best in 'mature' individuals. Those who are perhaps a little older or who have very deep lines or facial scars or defects. This works well in the nasolabial folds and in patients who have acne scars in the cheeks."
One of the major misconceptions patients have about fillers is that they don't last very long. However, Dr. Gold explains some can last for more than a year. "If you are injecting the volume filler Sculptra Aesthetic and get one to full correction, clinical work suggests this can last for upwards of two years," he says. "Hyaluronic acid fillers are the most popular fillers available today. And again, when injected by skilled injectors, results can be great and long-lasting."
