Redness in the skin is a telltale sign of unhealthy skin, but just because your skin veers towards the red side, doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. By pinpointing why your skin is suffering (it may not be what you think); you can start the process of fixing it.

Facial redness can be corrected, but if the underlying cause isn’t identified, your efforts may be null and void. “Any time I have a patient with redness, we need to determine if it’s persistent or eminent,” says Fort Lauderdale, FL, dermatologist Will Richardson, MD. “From there I usually do a blood test to check for certain diseases, like lupus, that can cause skin redness.” Once the root of the problem is established, the correct treatments are suggested.

“All redness isn’t the same, meaning it doesn’t stem from one single source, so the way it is remedied varies. For someone with redness as a result of sun damage and dilated blood vessels, I’ll use a pulsed-dye laser. For acne-related redness, I’ll recommend a topical antibiotic-benzoyl peroxide agent such as Ziana. And for the rosacea-related redness a six-week course of oral antibiotics is necessary” says the doctor.

So find out why you have redness and we’ll see you on the road to recovery.
