Hooping To Good Health

When was the last time you hula-hooped? I think my last time was probably in a contest during recess in 5th grade. Actually, come to think of it, my babysitting adventures in high school gave me some opportunities to show some six year olds my skills. From the looks of the headlines, it seems like the large ring that can be gyrated around the waist is reappearing in the lives of many adults.

According to new study, “hooping” (yes, as in hula-hooping) is emerging as a hot new weight-loss trend. Sixteen women between the ages of 16 and 59, who regularly attended choreographed hooping classes, were examined for the study. The results showed that the average caloric expenditure for one 30-minute, video-led class was 210 calories. Hooping expends the same amount of energy as walking 4 to 4.5 miles per hour, which is enough to help a person shed some pounds, researchers say.

Sounds like fun to me, would you consider hooping to help get in shape? Have you tried it as an exercise?
