“It’s Friday night guys…do me right,” the 30-year-old captioned a shot of a a sleek canned beverage called Som Sleep ($10 for four), which she appeared to be sipping in bed. Upon doing our research, we learned that a near-death experience due to a severe lack of sleep led Som Sleep founder John Shegerian to create the new sleep-promoting brand, which is already making waves after just a few months of sales.
The brand has yet to be evaluated by the FDA, but the “anti-energy drinks” are said (and proven, according to customer reviews) to help support sleep when drank 30 minutes before you’re ready to go to bed for the night. Available in both regular and sugar-free options, the berry-flavored noncarbonated drink is packed with ingredients that are sure to lull you off to sleep like magnesium and vitamin B6 for healthy sleep patterns and L-theanine (an amino acid derived from green and black and green tea leaves) and GABA for a boost of internal zen. The addition of melatonin aids with maintaining a normal circadian rhythm through the night and over time.
At only 40 calories a can—plus, they’re vegan, gluten-free and said to be non-habit forming—these might be worth a shot if you’re finding yourself tossing and turning all night. In fact, the brand recommends sipping on the drink only when you have a minimum of seven to eight hours to commit to sleeping. The website also reveals that customers have reported feeling rested and refreshed after waking up.
As of now, Som Sleep is available in a four-pack, 12-pack and 24-pack for one-time purchase or recurring delivery through the company’s website. They’ll also soon be available on Amazon.
