Inclusivity has finally become a major theme among brands in the beauty industry, making customers of various skin tones and hair types extremely happy with the larger range of products. However, there’s still one group of people that’s been generally left untouched by the inclusivity movement, and it’s about time that’s officially ended.
Those with disabilities—specifically blindness—have struggled with their cosmetics from the beginning. However, like all other aspects of their routine, individuals with low or no vision have developed ways to ensure their routine is a bit easier day-to-day, even when it comes to simple tasks like differentiating between their shampoo and conditioner bottle. Since most companies make the bottles identical, it can be difficult to know which one to use while showering if you’re blind—until now, thats is.

In an announcement released on October 11 (aka World Sight Day), Herbal Essences revealed they are altering their packaging to ensure those with vision impairment are able tell their products apart. The new initiative will redesign the brands Bio:Renew line of botanical shampoos and conditioners by adding raised lines on the back, lower section of bottles to indicate shampoos and raised dots in the same area to indicate conditioners. This new design will allow people to feel which bottle is which in order to avoid any future mix ups.
As an added benefit, a new video released by the brand to explain the new change also points out that this helps both people with low or no vision as well as those with English as a second language. For such a small design change, this will make a huge impact on a lot of lives, making us hope that other brands will follow their example in the future.
