Helen Mirren Credits “Shameless” Kim Kardashian for Changing the Beauty Game

By ·

At 70 years old and still considered one of the sexiest women alive, Dame Helen Mirren knows a few things about having to live up to unrealistic beauty standards. The Oscar-winning actor recently spoke to The Sunday Telegraph’s Stella Magazine about the ways in which beauty standards have changed since her earlier days in the limelight, and in doing so praises Kim Kardashian and a handful of other famous and “shameless” women for helping to change body ideals.

Mirren says she is thrilled with the ways in which beauty has changed and she credits women who are known for not caring about what others think for effecting change in how society views female sexuality and diverse body types. “When I was growing up, it was thought to be unbelievably sluttish to even have a bra strap showing. Everything was about women conforming. I love shameless women. Shameless and proud!” she says. “Women were controlled by being shamed, so I love women who have claimed their own bodies: Madonna, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, Bonnie Raitt. I love Pussy Riot more than anything in the world. They all raise their middle fingers to this epithet of ‘slut.’ They wear what they want to wear, behave as they want to behave.”

If you’ve never thought you’d hear the term Pussy Riot come out of Mirren’s mouth, even more surprising is her take on booty icon Kim Kardashian. “I’m not into the Kardashians, it’s a phenomenon I just don’t find interesting, but–and this is the big word: B-U-T-T– it’s wonderful that you’re allowed to have a butt nowadays! Thanks to Madame Kardashian, and before her, J-Lo. We’re also allowed to have thighs now, which is great too. It’s very positive.”

No response yet from Kardashian on Mirren’s comments, but one can assume she wholeheartedly agrees on her “shameless” influence and has not plans to change. Just last month the reality TV star accepted a Webby award for “breaking the internet” and her acceptance speech was simply: “Nude selfies till I die.”
