A weight loss and food addiction specialist recently shared her secret weapon to losing weight, and it is not what you think it is.
“Whenever I start coaching a new client, I always suggest she buy a George Foreman Grill,” Tiffany Wright told Prevention. The nutritionist also has first-hand experience, having lost over 100 pounds in a year herself. She lays out a few reasons why this surprising cooking tool is ideal when trying to diet.

First, the grill is nonstick, which means you don’t have to use any extra oil to cook foods on it. There are also benefits to cooking on such a low heat. According to the National Cancer Institute, when cooking meats at high temperatures, you can increase your risk for cancer.

Wright’s main reason for turning to the grill for weight loss is because of how well it works with the meal plan she created for herself and that she advises for her clients. Once Wright pinpointed her “problem foods”—sweets and processed carbs—she gave them up. Then she created a meal plan that was at least 1,500 calories a day and combined healthy carbohydrates with protein. This typically included a cup of carbs like beans or rice, two cups of vegetables and four ounces of a lean protein like fish or chicken.
In addition to the healthier cooking method, “I’ve found that the George Foreman Grill is the absolute best way to make those portions happen—a four-ounce portion of protein fits perfectly on the grill,” explains Wright. “On a full-size grill, though, that portion size would look tiny,” said Wright. “Which might make you feel deprived or like you’re getting less food.”
On top of dieting and using the George Foreman grill to do it, Wright also recommends workouts like interval training using weights and cardio. However, she claims the grill is an “integral part of the plan.”
