Question: What do celebrities Sofia Richie, Lauren Hutton, Martha Stewart and Coco Rocha have in common? Answer: great hair, thanks to a secret from their hairstylist Adel Chabbi, owner of Adel Atelier in New York. His trick? Apply oil to hair before shampooing.
“Oil on hair will act as a shield to protect hair from the shampoos that can cause hair to become dry,” explains Chabbi. “When you apply oil first, it allows the shampoo to wash and clean the hair, not dry it out.”
In addition to being one of the most genius preventive tricks we’ve ever heard, a pre-shower oiling also has other benefits, such as allowing hair maximum absorption of nourishing ingredients. “Applying oil to dry hair helps the absorption of oil to be more effective because hair is not already saturated by water,” says Chabbi. “Organic oils such as avocado, sweet almond oil and olive oil are best.”

“You can apply oil on hair before every wash and keep it on for as long as you want,” Chabbi advises. “A good shampoo will remove the oil but keep the hair’s elasticity and shine. Even when the oil has been washed out, it will help to avoid split ends and frizzy texture.”
