1. Blow-Dryers, Straightening Irons and Curling Irons
Anything that involves heat on the scalp and hair can cause additional damage, stress and breakage.
2. Limit Your Use of Heavy Styling Products
Hair products that are thick, like creams, gels and lotions, can leave a residue on the scalp and clog the hair follicle, preventing it from growing properly.
3. Plastic or Metal Brushes
Natural bristles, namely boar bristles, are better to use since they are less likely to tear the hair out and inflame the scalp.
4. Hot Water
The hotter the water, the more likely it is to cause hair to become brittle and break.
5. Chemical Treatments
“Chemical-based treatments like a perm or relaxer cause stress to the hair that it doesn’t need to be exposed to. Even color damage from bleaching and over-processing can force hair to fall out,” explains stylist Giovanna Lampo of the Fekkai Salon in Greenwich, CT.
6. The Sun
Quintero says that prolonged UV exposure makes the cuticle layer weak and prone to breakage, resulting in brittle hair that can cause even more hair loss.
