We are always on the hunt for the latest weight-loss secret to help us shed those unwanted pounds, and, according to new research, it may be as close as the nearest fruit stand. Results of a new study from Vanderbilt University are touting grapefruit as the latest diet staple-so pucker up, because you can enjoy this tangy fruit three times a day with your low-calorie menu.
During a 14-week study, participants consumed half a grapefruit, about half a cup of 100 percent grapefruit juice or about half a cup of water with three meals, which were part of a reduced-calorie diet. Results revealed a weight loss of, on average, 15 pounds per person, or 7.1 percent body weight. Those who chose the 100 percent grapefruit juice experienced similar weight loss to those who chose water or actual grapefruit, dispelling the myth that fruit juice should always be avoided when dieting.
