Picture a stereotypical nerd. No doubt, you envision glasses, right? Well, it may be time to rethink your notion of geekiness.
For the first time ever, a study was conducted on the relationship between myopia (nearsightedness) and personality. Subjects were analyzed by University of Melbourne psychologists, in association with the school’s Centre for Eye Research, using a groundbreaking measuring system of five major character traits: extroversion, openness, neuroticism, conscientiousness and agreeableness.
The results revealed that those with myopia are no more introverted or neurotic than their 20/20 counterparts. In fact, glasses wearers ranked higher in agreeableness.
“Good eye care is really important, but unfortunately, there are not always good associations with wearing glasses,” said researcher and professor Paul Baird. “This shows that people, particularly children, should not avoid or delay wearing glasses due to preconceived ideas about what it would imply about their personalities.”
