Gisele Bündchen is one of the most well-known (and well-paid) supermodels the fashion industry has ever seen. Unsurprisingly, the Victoria’s Secret model alum has an incredible body, however, it turns out that even Bündchen can fall victim to insecurity. In fact, she even turned to plastic surgery due to self-esteem issues—a choice she immediately regretted.
After having children, Bündchen felt that her breasts had become smaller than they were before and even slightly uneven. “I was always praised for my body, and I felt like people had expectations from me that I couldn’t deliver,” Bündchen, 38, told People Magazine. “I felt very vulnerable, because I can work out, I can eat healthy, but I can’t change the fact that both of my kids enjoyed the left boob more than the right. All I wanted was for them to be even and for people to stop commenting on it.”
So, in order to boost her self-esteem and change her breasts into something that more closely resembled her body pre-babies, Bündchen says she discreetly got a breast augmentation. “When I woke up, I was like, ‘What have I done?’ I felt like I was living in a body I didn’t recognize,” she said. “For the first year I wore [baggy] clothes because I felt uncomfortable.”
Thankfully, Bündchen says her husband was reassuring and compassionate during this difficult time period. “He just said, ‘I love you no matter what’ and that I looked beautiful,” she explained. “This was definitely another lesson: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. But I wish I would have learned that a different way.”
