Get the Look: Olivia Wilde’s Hair featured image

Perfectly messy yet elegant, actress Olivia Wilde’s deconstructed chignon evokes red-carpet glamour from every angle. Celebrity hairstylist Mara Roszak gave us the scoop on what inspired the romantic, rolled-under look and how she created it.

What The Stylist Says
“Olivia’s look was inspired by her classic yet modern Valentino dress,” says Roszak. “I pulled references from the ’60s, knowing I wanted her hair to have that feel, but with a youthful edge and lived-in texture that adds a fresh, sexy element.”

Roszak says that the soft, feminine updo is “extremely versatile and can work on anyone, but looks best on those who have some dimension such as highlights, which allow you to see more of the detail in the style.”

How To Get The Look
Step 1

Prep towel-dried hair with volumizer and sea salt spray and then blow-dry. Using a 1-inch barrel iron, curl the crown section, rotating the direction of the waves for an effortless look. Brush out waves with your fingers.

Step 2
Section off the crown and sides in front of your ear, then make a ponytail with the back section. Twist it into a loose bun and pin in place. Tease the crown for a slight bump and then incorporate pieces of it into the bun, adding one side at a time and wrapping the ends around the bun, then pinning them in place. Allow some pieces to fall out around your face.

Step 3
Finish off the look with a lightweight hairspray like Ouidad Curl Last Flexible-Hold Hairspray. Its frizz-fighting formula delivers buildable hold without making your
hair feel sticky or stiff.
