Spider veins-those blue or purple veins of the legs that are not elevated and do not cause pain-have two treatment options: laser or sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is the gold standard, and these injections can readily eliminate veins, but sometime can sting, plus some just don’t like needles. Alternatively, laser treatments can erase smaller veins, but it too, is not a totally painless process.
Plan ahead if you want vein-free legs when the warmer weather hits because either treatment can leave a brown streaking or spotting where veins were treated. This resolves in a few weeks to a months, but it’s also important to know that both procedures may require more than one treatment. In any case, spider vein treatments are permanent but while you eliminate the veins you have you can potentially develop new ones.
