Research suggests that fuller lips may have as much to do with a woman’s perceived age as the appearance of wrinkles. “The volume in your lips starts to decline as early as in the mid-30s,” says Palm Beach Gardens, FL, facial plastic surgeon Mark R. Murphy, MD. But how can you create a natural-looking, full lip without overdoing it?
A common concern among women who augment their lips is that they’ll be overfilled, creating a “duck-like” look where the lips jut out. But, in the hands of an experienced injector who can fill the lips incrementally, the lips can be augmented to create a completely natural look. “People need to be realistic about the outcome-especially if you have small lips. You can’t create more of the pink part,” says Englewood, CO, facial plastic surgeon Michael Menachof, MD.
Injecting the lips with hyaluronic acid filler likes Restylane, Juvéderm and Perlane can create fuller, plumper lips. There are two different types of candidates that benefit from lip injections, explains Dr. Menachof. “One needs volume; the other needs to balance their features.” But in some, injecting Botox (which reduces movement of the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles) around the mouth can help create a more youthful appearance all around. “For those with a lot of lines around the mouth, adding just volume to the lips will not be enough,” explains Dr. Murphy. “You also need to treat the area with Botox to minimize the lines.
