Fringe Cosmetic Procedures And Their Popularity

Topics deemed newsworthy by the media are frequently defined by their singularity, extremity, and voyeuristic appeal; needless to say, cosmetic procedures that get media attention are no exception to the rule. Fittingly, a new survey has highlighted the discrepancy between vast media coverage of so-called “fringe” cosmetic procedures and their actual prevalence.

Last month, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery revealed the results of their “Less Common Cosmetic Procedures” consumer survey. Procedures that fall into this category include calf implants, buttock implants, lip implants, genital enhancement, etc. And while there’s no shortage of media coverage about these kinds of operations, the survey shows that there is a shortage of patients.

Only 1.6% of all survey respondents have undergone a less common cosmetic surgical procedure. Of that markedly small number, about 28% had gotten bicep or tricep implant surgery, and almost 43% had undergone an eyelash transplant.

“This survey highlights that even though there has been increased attention on these procedures, the numbers prove that the trend is minimal at this point in time,” said Patrick McMenamin, MD, President of the AACS, reiterating the disparity.

If, despite the uncommonness, you feel that one of these treatments is right for you, it is imperative to find a surgeon who has demonstrable experience with your chosen procedure. This may take longer than with other procedures, but a thorough search increases your chances of the safest possible outcome.
