The next time someone keeps their distance, claiming to be allergic to your perfume, it’s more likely that they simply don’t like it. According to new research, allergic reactions to fragrances have been declining significantly over the last decade.

According to respected Portuguese dermatologist Olivia Bordalo, better ingredients are going into perfumes, making them more tolerable to our immune systems.

“The number of cases of contact dermatitis we see caused by allergies to fragrances and perfumes are decreasing,” she explained at an International Fragrance Association conference. “This is because the composition of fragrances is changing and causing less of an allergic reaction while other household items seem to be causing more.”
