The effects of a facial go far beyond rest and relaxation. While you might not have the time or funds to splurge on the relaxing and beneficial spa treatment, it’s still important to give your skin a thorough cleanse every now and again, even if you do it yourself. New York dermatologist, Howard Sobel, MD shared four simple steps for an at-home facial, so you can achieve healthier and more radiant skin in minutes, sans spa.
1. Cleanse and Exfoliate
The first step to beautiful skin is exfoliation to remove dead cells that dull the skin’s appearance. Prior to exfoliation, wash the skin with a gentle cleanser to remove any makeup, dirt and oil. Next, exfoliate the skin for 1-2 minutes. It’s important to cleanse and exfoliate the skin first, as this offers better absorption of following skin-care products.
Soak a washcloth in the sink filled with warm water. Ring out the washcloth and place over your face for one to two minutes, allowing the steam to open, hydrate and soften the skin. Repeat this process two to three times or until skin feels soft and supple.
3. Revitalize the Eyes
Improve your skin texture and make your eyes appear more awake by applying an eye cream. Perform a mini-massage around your eyes with an eye cream that contains vitamins and green tea antioxidants such as DDF Nourishing Eye Cream ($55). The anti-inflammatory properties will reduce any puffiness and moisture will be restored to the delicate area. Lightly dot the product under the eye area and use your fingertips to gently message the cream in circular upward motions.
Finish your facial by applying a moisturizer to the face and neck for instant skin softening and smoothing. It’s important to restore moisture to the rest of your face as cleansers can strip healthy oils from your skin. Look for products with vitamin B5 (or niacinamide), which acts as an anti-inflammatory and is fundamental to allowing skin hydrate itself.
