Ultramatte lipsticks that had to be layered and “locked in” were once the way to get long-lasting color. These versions use oils, butters and proprietary ingredients, to give staying power and any finish. “Apply long-wear lip colors thin and evenly or the excess will set into a gummy texture,” advises Jake Bailey, celebrity makeup artist for CoverGirl.
The Matte Lipstick
The more matte your lipstick, the longer it should stay on. Tarte Glamazon Pure Performance 12-Hour Lipstick ($26) is infused with the brand’s favored Amazonian clay so it stays in place without fading, feathering, bleeding or that dried-out look. We like it because it’s a true long-wear product that goes on smooth without clumping or chapping.
The Liquid Lipstick
Housed within the tiny tube of Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick ($28) lies serious lip color that endures for 14 hours. Vitamins, antioxidants and polymers give a smooth, intense finish, creating a film to lock-in moisture and color. It ‘sets’ after about one minute and stays put for hours on end.
The Creamy Lipstick
When a bold lip is in order, yet you crave a creamy finish that stands the test of time, try Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick ($22). With a hefty selection of colors to choose from, this superpigmented lipstick won’t dehydrate the lips—it moisturizes with vitamin E and avocado oil. Not only does it claim to last for six hours but it really coats the lips in bold color without accentuating lip lines and wrinkles.
The Lip Stain
CoverGirl Outlast ($8.50) boasts a marker-like tip to deposit a sheer wash of color exactly where you need it. And, since it’s water-based, it doesn’t make the lips look gloppy or heavy or overly made up. It dries fast and lasts for 10 hours. Try exfoliating your lips before applying for even color.
