In response to research indicating that an astounding 70 percent of women who are candidates for breast reconstruction are not being made aware of their options, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has partnered with the Plastic Surgery Foundation (PSF) to launch the first annual Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day.

Set to take place on October 17, 2012, during Breast Cancer Awareness month, BRA Day will be recognized in the U.S. as well as 20 other countries, marking international awareness for breast reconstruction options following a mastectomy. And, the worthy cause has some serious star power behind it. Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Jewel has signed on as the official spokesperson for BRA Day. Known for advocating breast cancer awareness, Jewel has written a song honoring breast reconstruction patients, which she will perform during a charitable concert set to take place October 29 during the Plastic Surgery: The Meeting conference taking place in New Orleans.

The goal of BRA Day is to raise awareness about reconstruction options to breast cancer patients and ensure that everyone is being educated and informed about their options. In a press release, ASPS President Malcolm Z Roth, MD, says, “We are thrilled that Jewel will be lending her time, talent and humanitarian spirit to National BRA Day. We feel that her passionate voice will help bring awareness to this important cause, and inspire women who are on the road to recovery and a full life beyond breast cancer.”
