For many of us, working out can be a tedious task and we only do it when forced. But every once and a while a workout comes along that you actually look forward to, and, dare we say it, get excited about. That’s exactly what I found at Physique 57 in Beverly Hills, CA.

This 57-minute program combines isometric exercises with stretches and ballet technique to help lengthen and sculpt your muscles. You’ll go through a series of sprints and recoveries where you push yourself to your limit—your legs will shake uncontrollably—and then get a chance to stretch the muscles you just worked. And here’s the best part, you’ll start to see results in just eight classes—no lie!

After a special two-week challenge, I loved this workout so much that I continued on for another month and even convinced a couple of my friends to join. One friend told me that she lost seven pounds in just three weeks. I truly believe that this class transformed my body. My arms and legs were more toned and as time went on, my flexibility increased tremendously.

The key to this total body transformation is the isometric exercises you do in the classes. These are a type of strength training that involves small, static contractions of the muscle. “Isometrics are used in Physique 57 choreography, especially in the seat component of class,” says Antonietta Vicario, assistant director of training. “Anytime a body part moves in a minimal way against the resistance of another muscle group, you are engaging your muscles isometrically.” These small movements of the leg create a huge contraction of the muscles in the seat and are what tone and trim.

But isometrics alone won’t get you to where you want to be. That’s why you work the muscles in different ranges of motion in each Physique 57 class. “The blend of different types of strength training, including isometrics along with fuller bodied movements and stretching lead to a balanced, strong and healthy body,” she says.

If you live in New York City or Los Angeles, I highly recommend trying out one of their in-studio classes. Just be warned that you will become addicted.
