You’ve probably heard a lot of back and forth over the years when it comes to yogurt. One day it’s good for your skin and the next it’s skin enemy number one—it’s enough to make you dizzy. So in an effort to make your head stop spinning, we got the experts to reveal the truth.
There are a lot of great reasons to eat yogurt—it’s chock full of calcium, probiotics, digestive enzymes and other nutrients—but as far as your skin goes, there’s not much evidence to say whether it’s good or bad for it. That’s what Beverly Hills, CA, dermatologist Rhonda Rand, MD, has encountered. “People have used it since ancient Greece and there’s a lot of interesting possibilities, but you don’t see any good studies.”
If there’s anything about yogurt that could be good for your skin, it’s the lactic acid that’s inside. “Lactic acid could make your skin a little softer, and could help sooth dry skin,” says Dr. Rand. “There’s just so many better, more exact ways to improve your skin out there. We know we’ll see results with certain products and treatments, but we don’t know about yogurt.”
If you suffer from skin sensitivities, yogurt may help. “People with skin sensitivities rarely produce enough stomach acid (especially those noticing a localized rash around their mouths),” says aesthetician Heather Long. “I tell clients to consider probiotics, colonics and digestive enzymes. Yogurt is a great power-food, but to see a real difference, you need billions of probiotics (yogurt only contains a few).”
