The way I react to news of a new filler indication achieving the FDA’s stamp of approval is similar to the way Gen Z reacts when Jeffree Star drops a new palette. So for me, today’s news that Juvéderm Voluma finally got the green light to be used in the chin was needless to say, exciting.

The first and only filler to receive U.S. FDA-approval for the augmentation of the chin region, hyaluronic acid–based Voluma was created to enhance the midface by replacing volume in the cheeks where it’s diminished over time. “When assessing facial anatomy, the chin is a critical component to facial balance, yet it is often overlooked,” says Carrie Strom, senior vice president of AbbVie, and president of global Allergan Aesthetics. “Due to its distinct gel properties and product profile, Voluma is uniquely suitable to address this need. It’s always rewarding when we can offer a safe and effective nonsurgical alternative to patients. Addressing chin contour and shape is another way we are moving the market forward through our commitment to continued innovation.”

Although it wasn’t formally approved for this use until now, dermatologists have been injecting filler into the chin for years, off-label. “This is a great new indication,” says Fort Lauderdale, FL dermatologist Dr. Matthew J. Elias. “This is an area that has often been treated by expert dermatologists, but having an indication brings awareness to patients that this can be treated!”

According to Allergan Aesthetics, in the U.S. pivotal study, Voluma was shown to be safe and effective for augmentation of the chin, with the majority of patients reporting high satisfaction rates throughout their one-year follow-up. And when properly injected in the right patient, the filler can last up to two years.

“The chin is one of the most underappreciated yet potentially game-changing areas of the face,” says Omaha, NE dermatologist Joel Schlessinger, MD. “Most people don’t realize the magic that can happen if a recessed chin is corrected, and feel a chin implant is the only way to address it.  While this is possible, it is also fixed and unable to be changed as the contours of your chin change with age. That is why Voluma’s approval is such a big deal! Voluma offers up to two years of correction and an instantaneous, easy improvement. This will be a huge area of interest and truly will improve the appearance of many individuals!”
