There’s been a sudden surge of sneakers that are said to enhance every step with extra toning, and as one of the first people on the MBT and FitFlop train a few years ago, my interest has definitely been piqued-especially since the latest addition to my home, a young shelter mutt, found both pairs’ soles too hard to resist gnawing.
I was pleased to see how affordable this new generation of toning footwear is, but there was something about the widely advertised sneakers that just didn’t get me going. It wasn’t until I saw a lesser-known option that I knew I’d found my fitness footwear match.
Earth Footwear incorporates what they call Kalsø Negative Heel Technology, which inclines the sole so the toe is 3.7 degrees higher than the heel. This allows weight to be shifted over the heels in such a way that the effect is greater toning and calorie burning. In fact, Earth boasts that their shoes-I went with the Glide-are clinically proven to burn four times more fat than other shoes.
And there’s a good reason why the brand is called Earth: they incorporate BioFoam cushioning into their usually-vegan designs, which means your foot is surrounded by 70% recycled materials, such as post-consumer plastic bottles. And when you’re done with your pair, even the outsoles will decompose faster than the other discarded shoes in the landfill.
So, why tell you about my eco-friendly new sneakers the day after Earth Day? Quite simply, environmental awareness is important every day you’re walking the planet-and you might as well burn more calories while you’re making your green mark.
