Brazilian Blowout, maker of the hair-straightening products, has received an official warning from the Food and Drug Administration. The notice gives the company until September 12 to comply with the FDA’s orders before it takes action.
The FDA has found toxic levels of formaldehyde in its product, which Brazilian Blowout has labeled as formaldehyde-free. However, the product contains methylene glycol that releases formaldehyde when treated hair is exposed to heat from styling tools such as flat irons and blow dryers. Therefore the FDA considers the product to be “adulterated” and “misbranded.”
Formaldehyde is found in several other “Brazilian style” keratin-based straightening treatments. Salon workers and consumers have reported several cases of health problems as a result of using these products to the FDA.
Brazilian Blowout’s website states that they are working with the FDA to help clear up the controversy surrounding their brand. We will have to wait until next week to learn how it ends.
