Thin body, fat face. Can these two things go together? Perhaps not naturally. When we finally drop those dreaded pounds from our bellies and backsides, an unfortunate side effect is that our faces get thinner as well. Fat Transfers If your face is losing its volume due to weight loss or age, it’s possible to fill it back out by using fat from another part of your body. Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is done through microliposuction from the fatty area, and then deposited into the face (best results are seen under the eyes, around the mouth, between brows and in the cheeks, lips and jawline). A few weeks of downtime is common, and not all fat transplants take, but those that do could be permanent. Also, since the fat cells are your own, you don’t risk an allergic reaction. Fillers A less-invasive, yet temporary, solution to lost facial volume is fillers like Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane, which are often used in areas once treated with fat transplants. The results with fillers are more predictable, according to many physicians, and they are immediate as well (with no downtime). Fillers are best for under the eyes, cheeks, temples, lips, chin and jawline. Some fillers are used “off-label” for some areas of the face, so ask your plastic surgeon which filler would work best for you.
