Some surgeons recommend bromelain supplements both before and after surgery. Bromelain contains the enzyme in pineapple stems, and it has been found to have an anti-inflammatory effect and the ability to reduce swelling.
In fact, a study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that patients healed 17% faster when taking a mixture of bromelain, vitamin C, rutin and grapeseed extract.
In the study, 82% of the participants benefited from taking the special blend of herbal supplements during the early phase of the healing process, with faster wound healing than subjects who received the placebo. However, doctors were unsure of which ingredient in the mixture was responsible for the outcomes.
Bromelain is commonly available where supplements are sold, but you should always consult your doctor before taking it or any supplement.
